Ottawa - Merger talks between the Canadian Alliance and Progressive Conservatives have been stalled for at least two weeks over what one negotiator said Wednesday were "philosophical differences." "We have a very small gap on paper in terms of what we haven't agreed on," Alliance Leader Stephen Harper said after meeting with his caucus Wednesday. "There's a gap on resolving the leadership issue." Ottawa - Conservative religious and family groups lost a major battle Thursday in their war against gay marriage when the country's highest court rejected their bid to appeal a lower court decision. A five-judge Supreme Court of Canada panel unanimously ruled that the groups cannot appeal a judgment by the Ontario Court of Appeal that found the traditional definition of marriage to be unconstitutional. Moose Jaw, Sask. - A jury on Wednesday accepted a bid by convicted wife murderer Colin Thatcher for an early parole hearing. The jury returned with its decision after about two hours of deliberating whether the former Saskatchewan cabinet minister deserved a chance to leave jail behind and return to the family ranch near Moose Jaw, Sask. Thatcher, convicted in 1984 for the murder of his former wife JoAnn Wilson, told the jury last week his spirit has been broken in prison and he just wants to live out his days in his home community.10/10/03
