Ottawa - Former federal NDP leader Ed Broadbent is returning to federal politics. Broadbent, who led the party to its strongest national showing ever during the 1988 federal election before resigning a year later, announced Thursday he'll seek his party's nomination in the downtown riding of Ottawa Centre. Pressure had been growing on Broadbent, who lives in the riding with wife Lucille, to re-enter politics and give a boost to new party leader Jack Layton. Broadbent, 67, said he is returning "enthusiastically and with great optimism." Ottawa - There were 31,714,637 of us in Canada on Oct. 1 this year, Statistics Canada estimates, up by 265,870 from a year earlier. Ottawa - Fear of a terrorist attack involving anthrax-laced cargo has prompted the federal government to explore the purchase of custom-tailored biological agent detectors. The contraband detection section of Canada's customs agency has invited companies to pitch products capable of screening containers and other shipments for toxic biological substances. The effort underscores concern in federal circles about the potentially devastating human and economic consequences of a toxic shipment going unnoticed. Money for the project will come from the hefty security budget allocated to departments following Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States.
