Ottawa - Conservative Leader Stephen Harper says legislation in the coming session of Parliament will have to be "in the best interest of the country," or his party will vote against it. That includes the throne speech next Monday. Conservatives will treat the speech like any other piece of legislation, reserving the right to vote against it, he said Tuesday after meeting Gov. Gen. Adrienne Clarkson. Harper also wants a Commons debate before the government decides whether to support a U.S.-led missile-defence program. Conservatives would also vote against a pay raise for MPs. Guelph, Ont. - Ontario will be the final jurisdiction in North America to introduce a regulation requiring toxic waste to be pre-treated before being dumped, Premier Dalton McGuinty announced today. Moncton, N.B. - Despite divisions over equalization and a looming population crisis, Atlantic Canada's future is bright, the region's four Conservative premiers said Tuesday. The leaders of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island told an Atlantic economic summit the region is beginning to reap benefits from its peaceful lifestyle, beautiful geography and well-educated workforce. "When I look to the future, it's so bright my eyes hurt," said Newfoundland Premier Danny Williams.
