Toronto - The governor general will represent Canada and a former prime minister will be a speaker at the state funeral of former U.S. president Ronald Reagan. Sources familiar with the funeral planning say Reagan's widow, Nancy, invited former prime minister Brian Mulroney to speak at the funeral, which is set for Friday in Washington. And the prime minister's office says Governor General Adrienne Clarkson will represent Canada at the ceremony. Mulroney and Reagan became close when they led their countries during the 1980s. Toronto - A controversial bill that will hold Ontario hospitals accountable for the money they spend has been passed by the provincial legislature. Hospitals say it will give the government too much power over hospital boards and could be used to hold board members liable for costs. Unions have called it a step toward the privatization of health care. Brampton - A Liberal riding association in Brampton, Ont., has rejected a candidate appointed by Paul Martin and thrown its support behind the riding's New Democratic Party challenger. The Liberals in Brampton-Springdale, northwest of Toronto, were outraged when Martin cancelled their nomination vote by appointing Ruby Dhalla as the local candidate. Riding association vice-president Raj Jhajj said Martin's decision to override a nomination meeting has left many Liberals bitter.
