Edmonton - Beginning on Monday, the Alberta government will open its adoption records so adopted children and their birth parents can more easily locate their biological records. That means adult children and birth parents can search the records for names, addresses or places of birth, all of which is considered identifying information that has until recently been sealed in government records. British Columbia and Newfoundland have already opened their records. Any child or parent who wanted to remain anonymous could have filed a veto before the new Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act came into effect on Nov. 1. Niagara Falls, Ont. - A Toronto tax accountant has won the largest slot-machine jackpot in Canadian history, picking up nearly $5.8 million at a Niagara Falls casino. Nick Hulst hit it big after spending $60 on a Megabucks slot machine at Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort around noon on Saturday. He won $5,781,854.41 on the 20th spin. Hulst says he plans to celebrate his good fortune by heading to Las Vegas to test his luck. Toronto - Britain's navy knew a decade ago about problems with electrical insulation on the submarines Canada later bought, a published report says. An electrical fire crippled one of the four refitted subs, HMCS Chicoutimi, last month, killing Lieut. Chris Saunders, 32, and injuring nine others.
