Ottawa - The federal government has no immediate plans to provide more money for Olympians, according to Canada's sports minister. Stephen Owen, minister of state for sport, said Ottawa instead should consider giving the provinces more money to develop sports at the school level. "It seems a pretty obvious conclusion to draw that if you've got less organized sport available on a regular basis right through the school system, eventually that's going to be reflected in less high-performance athletes," Owen told the Globe and Mail. Owen's remarks come after Canada managed to win only 12 medals at the Athens Olympic Games, the country's worst Olympic performance since the 1988 Games in Seoul where Canada won 10 medals. Ottawa - A series of surveys by the Canadian Labour Congress show that a growing number of Canadians are worried about how to pay the bills and pay for food once they reach the official retirement age. Some of the respondents said that big-city living was becoming too expensive and worried that a declining birth rate would mean fewer workers to support an aging population. Edmonton - A former Edmonton bank manager accused of defrauding his employer of $16 million and spending the money on a lavish lifestyle that included six mistresses pleaded guilty on Monday. Officials have been able to trace only about one-quarter of the missing money.
