Smiths Falls, Ontario - Liberal attacks on Conservative plans to cut taxes have already reached "bizarre and silly levels," says Tory Leader Stephen Harper. He defended what he calls a "moderate" plan to lower middle-income taxes during a speech yesterday to a packed legion hall in this town south of Ottawa. "The prime minister suggests we are un-Canadian because we want lower taxes - if you can believe this," he said. Mitchell, Ontario - One of two tornadoes that struck southwestern Ontario over the weekend may have been the strongest to hit the province in eight years. "Given the damage that I've witnessed today, it's a miracle that no one was hurt," Geoff Coulson, an Environment Canada meteorologist, said yesterday from the scene. The wave of severe weather Saturday spawned two twisters in an area not far from Stratford, Ont., he said. Prince Albert, Saskatchewan - Two prison guards were injured when a group of inmates at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary refused to go back to their cells Friday. The guards were treated at the federal prison for minor injuries and sent home, Shawn Bird, co-ordinator of correctional operations, said Saturday. He said the guards were injured at the beginning of the disturbance, which started about 4 p.m. Friday afternoon and ended nearly nine hours later.
