Niagara Falls, Ont. - Seeking asylum in Canada became more complicated on Wednesday, as new legislation took effect, closing the Canada-U.S. border to refugees. Before the rules took effect, many would take flights to the United States ? where more international flights land ? then cross the border into Canada, where the refugee system is more welcoming. Nipawin, Sask. - An elderly Saskatchewan man is recovering from frostbite after being left in a bus for the disabled all night on Christmas Eve. Temperatures fell to nearly ?30 C during the 12 hours the man spent on the bus in Nipawin, about 225 km northeast of Saskatoon. His medical condition made it impossible for him to speak or cry for help. Nipawin RCMP are investigating. St. John's Nfld. - The cities of Newfoundland and Labrador have followed the province into the breach, and are refusing to fly the Maple Leaf. Last week, Premier Danny Williams ordered the Canadian flag removed from provincial buildings after negotiations with the federal government failed to produce a deal that would allow the province to keep all the revenue from offshore oil and gas. The mayors of St. John's, Corner Brook and Mount Pearl have now offered their support for Williams's stand, ordering the Maple Leaf removed from their city halls.
