Ottawa - In his first address to the Conservative caucus since winning the party's leadership race on Saturday, Stephen Harper appointed Peter MacKay the new deputy leader of the party. MacKay, the former leader of the Progressive Conservative party, will replace deputy leader Elsie Wayne, who has decided not to run in the next election. Last October, MacKay signed an agreement with Harper to unite his party with the Canadian Alliance. Harper won a first-ballot victory Saturday with 55.5 per cent of the votes, defeating former auto parts executive Belinda Stronach (35 per cent) and former Ontario cabinet minister Tony Clement (9.5 per cent) for the party leadership. Winnipeg - Emergency officials had to reassure dozens of callers that a colourful fireball seen speeding across the sky over Manitoba and Saskatchewan Sunday night was not an exploding plane but likely a large meteor. RCMP Const. Patrick Therrien saw the streak of light as he left his detachment in Oakbank, Man., just east of Winnipeg. "It was turquoise in colour and it was white in the front, just like in the movies Ð a comet with a long tail." Toronto - The Toronto Police hate crimes unit is investigating the desecration of a Jewish cemetery, where vandals overturned 27 headstones, along with benches and other property.
