Hamilton - Long-time Liberal member of Parliament Sheila Copps says hundreds of supporters were prevented from voting for her Saturday during a nomination battle eventually won by Transport Minister Tony Valeri. Copps said that she's weighing her options, including whether to file a complaint about alleged voting irregularities. She is also thinking about running as an independent candidate in the riding of Hamilton-Stoney Creek. Edmonton - Frustrated at reports that large meat-packing plants may be enjoying big profits in the midst of the BSE crisis, some cattle farmers in the Edmonton area want to set up a co-operative slaughterhouse. Former member of Parliament Stan Schellenberger, who came up with the idea, says the farmers think running their own operation will give them some inside information on the packing industry's profit margins. Montreal - Conservative leadership candidate Belinda Stronach denied suggestions Sunday that her campaign organizers have been using her wealth to recruit key support in Quebec. The new federal Conservative party picks a leader March 20. Although only a small fraction of its members are in Quebec, ridings in the province will carry about 25 per cent of the total voting share under the system chosen when the Alliance and Tories merged.
