Dallas, Texas - A Canadian has been sentenced to more than five years in jail in Texas for attempting to carry 32 razor blades on to an aircraft. Prosecutors say he was trying to test the effectiveness of the security system at the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Fazal Karim, a Canadian of Pakistani origin, was also ordered to pay a fine of $20,000 US, and will be turned over to immigration authorities for deportation after he serves his 63-month sentence. The 37-year-old was caught last March with 32 double-edged razor blades in his carry-on luggage. The blades were concealed in a box containing a coiled belt. He was convicted of attempting to carry concealed weapons, as well as making false statements about his immigration status. Edmonton - A report has been released on the quality of life in 20 urban centres. Overall, life is pretty good for most people living in Canada's major cities; people are making more money, are better educated and living in a healthy environment, but not everybody is sharing in the growing prosperity. Ottawa - MPs investigating the sponsorship scandal say they are a long way from being able to tell Canadians why it happened. The committee is trying to discover how as much as $100 million was paid to a handful of Quebec advertising companies.
