Fredericton - Martha Stewart and the Antiques Roadshow may have played a role in the mysterious theft of an old, cast-iron bench from a New Brunswick church. Members of the United Church in Marysville, on the outskirts of Fredericton, are mourning the loss of the beautiful bench once owned by 19th-century industrialist, Alexander (Boss) Gibson. Rev. Mac Campbell said a similar bench valued at $14,000 to $16,000 (US), was discussed in an article on antiques published in the Martha Stewart Living magazine. Ottawa - As the surplus of Employment Insurance overpayments reaches $44 billion, Human Resources Minister Joe Volpe defended what his opponents call another Liberal rip-off. He did so even as he conceded some changes are needed. Volpe said in an interview when asked if EI premiums should be cut. "We've been doing it every year for the last 10 years." Still, one of Canada's oldest and most popular social programs is expected to take $3-billion more out of taxpayers' pockets than it needs to break even. Montreal - Prime Minister Paul Martin must take responsibility for the sponsorship scandal that has rocked his government, Conservative leadership hopeful Belinda Stronach said Wednesday. "As a captain of a ship, you have to take responsibility."
