Vernon, B.C. - Relatives of an elderly B.C. man beaten to death in his home say the RCMP should have told Vernon residents that a convicted murderer was on the loose in their community. Eric Norman Fish is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 75-year-old Bill Abramenko, who died of injuries he suffered in a home invasion robbery last week. Fish was on parole for a 1984 murder in Windsor, Ont., when he walked away from his Vernon halfway house on June 21 of this year. Authorities issued a warrant for his arrest, but there was no widespread public alert. Toronto - A friendly backyard barbecue Saturday has netted four southern Ontario couples half of the largest jackpot in the history of Lotto 6/49. The couples, all from Milton, were having a family get together when they decided on a whim to spend $20 on tickets for the $29 million prize. Each couple will receive $3.5 million. The group of parents, part-time teachers, construction workers and auto mechanics said that despite the winnings, they plan to keep their jobs Port Moody, B.C. - A 47-year-old man fired dozens of shots from a rifle and caused a multi-car pileup in B.C. before police shot him to death on a Coquitlam highway early Monday. The gun battle also left a 34-year-old woman in serious but stable condition with gunshot wounds. Nobody else was hurt. Police say the two knew each other.
