Ottawa - The federal government has announced it will spend up to $3 million to help veterans attend Second World War commemorative ceremonies in Europe this year. Veterans Affairs Minister John McCallum said on Wednesday the government would offer as much as $1,000 to help pay for other veterans who want to attend ceremonies this June in France, or in Italy in October. McCallum noted that the average age of Juno Beach veterans is 82, and said helping them attend is the right thing to do. "Many of these veterans will be going for the last time," he said. As many as 3,000 veterans are expected to take advantage of the program.
