Dawson City - More than 160 forest fires in the Yukon have burned 5,000 square kilometres of land so far this season, an area nearly the size of P.E.I. Fires around Dawson City are growing at an alarming rate and the government has issued an evacuation order for the Klondike goldfields south of the city. Tara Christie, the head of the Klondike Placer Miners Association, says miners are taking the fire situation seriously. However, with gold prices rising, miners outside the evacuation area want to remain on their claims. There are still two months of fire season left to go in the Yukon. Ottawa - Jean Pelletier, former chief of staff to prime minister Jean Chrétien, is suing Public Works Minister Stephen Owen for comments he made in a published interview, according to Montreal's La Presse. Pelletier says Owen sullied his reputation in a June 4 interview with the Globe and Mail. In the interview, Owen alleges Pelletier and former public works minister Alfonso Gagliano were directly involved in the management of the sponsorship program, which doled out millions to Liberal-friendly ad companies. Banff, Alta. - The bodies of two missing hikers were discovered Monday by wardens in Alberta's Banff National Park.
