The concession in the arena has received a healthy helping of volunteer labour over the summer and fall. Glenn and Jody Young, Corey Wiwcharuk (electrical), and Romeo Trudeau all got paint under their nails and sawdust in their hair while making the area this Minor Hockey fundraiser occupies in the the Wilfred T. Lipton Arena a little more user friendly. They put in new countertop, cupboards, added a stove and got rid of an extra sink. The concession is now a bright and cheery place to spend the hours one must work in doing their part fundraising for Snow Lake Minor Hockey. On the local health front, the on again, off again construction of two personal care rooms at the Snow Lake Health Center (SLHC) is on again. (see full story below). There was recently some concern that bids would come in higher than the Provincial money allotted for the project and thereby render it cost prohibitive. However, the tenders were opened and reviewed at the beginning of October and bid from Nor-Man Electric/Mechanical Construction out of Thompson has been deemed successful. Alan Beilman, the Chair of the local District Health Committee (DHC) announced early this week that the years of hard work by the DHC should pay off with construction of the two bed addition to the SLHC this coming winter. He also stated that further add-ons would increase the bill by just over $26,000; however, the add-ons will be funded locally. I reported several weeks back on the development of a local runner, Ashton Lief (daughter of Kevin and Carolyn Lief). At that time, she had just finished competing at the Zone 11 Cross Country Run and placed second in the race. On that note, she has just returned from a major track event down in Killarney, Manitoba. There were close to 580 athletes competing at the meet, and Ashton was up against 147 other runners in the 3 km. event. While setting a personal best time over the distance, Ashton finished 28th in the pack. Although spring seems so far away, initial preparations are being made for an annual event that takes part during that season. The 50th Annual Cordwood Bonspiel will be held in March of 2004, and organizers Mary-Ann Otto, Karen Trudeau, Lola Leclair, Jacki Mihalicz, and Gina Galiz are looking for information, pictures, lists of winners/participants, etc from past 'spiels. The event is normally one of the most looked forward to happenings of the year, so this milestone version should make for even more excitement. If any former residents of Snow Lake, living in the Flin Flon area, have any such information, they could contact one of those gals. They are all in the book.
