A winter with less than average snowfall and a spring, summer, and fall with little in the way of rain have certainly taken their toll on Snow Lake area lakes. Wekusko Lake has seen water levels drop, by some estimates, anywhere from three to four feet. Users of the lake have reported reefs showing up this year in places that would have been driven right over in previous years. A beach on the south end of the lake, where residents were once able to water ski in past years, has now got 20 to 30 meters more beachfront and is navigated safely only by canoe or paddleboat. However, the low water level in this area has allowed property owners to clean away impediments that were once below the surface. A few years of normal winter snowfall (not on weekends) and adequate spring rains (only between the hours of midnight and 5:00 a.m.) would do wonders for the lakes, not to mention the constant threat of forest fires. On the social front, local businessman and contractor, Ken Booth and partner Joan Currie celebrated 25 years together on Saturday the 11th of October. Ken, Joan, family members and several close friends met for a celebratory meal at Richies Northwood Kitchen. The evening was highlighted by Ken's presentation of a beautiful diamond ring to his partner. Their close friend Darcy Turnbull wrote and performed a song marking the milestone. In other news, the Snow Lake RCMP detachment is currently investigating the theft of a propeller from an airboat, located on nearby Herblett Lake. The owner, Dennis Hornyak of Snow Lake, advised that the propeller, which is valued at $1,000, was noted missing on Friday, October 3rd, and that he last saw it attached to the boat motor on Saturday, September 27th. The propeller is described as being made of wood and having a natural varnish finish. It is approximately four feet in diameter. The perpetrators of the crime removed six to eight nuts and bolts in order to remove this propeller from the boat. RCMP spokesperson, Corporal Bob MacKnight said police are asking that anyone having information in regard to this theft to please contact Mr. Hornyak 358-2594, Snow Lake RCMP 358-7723 or Crime Stoppers at 1 800 222-8477. People providing information are not required to identify themselves and they may be eligible for a cash award, should the information provided result in the recovery of the propeller and/or the arrest of the person(s) responsible.
