This past weekend, Joseph H. Kerr School held their inaugural tournament of the 2003/04 school year, when they hosted a Senior High Girls ands Boys Invitational Volleyball event. In for the tourney were teams from Wabowden, Split Lake, Leaf Rapids, and Gillam. Personally, I was confused during the first match I watched. Volleyball rules have changed immeasurably since my school days. Not that I paid attention back then anyway, but apparently a rally point system is now recognized (loss of serve also means a point for the opponent). There are no 'net serves'. You can use any part of your body to get the ball over the net. Heck, I even watched one girl kick the ball over for a point. And the games go to 25, rather than 15. During that first game I watched, I thought the refs and scorekeepers were sleeping at the switch when the score went to 16. Anyway, the tournament was a successful one for both the girls and boys. The girls went through the event undefeated in match play, only to come up against a very tough and determined team from Gillam in the semi-finals. It went right down to the tiebreaker, with the Snow Lake girls just squeaking by with the required two points for a win. This put them into the final against the Wabowden Eagles, and Snow Lake's Lady Tigers bested them in two games for the win and tournament trophy for the third year running. The Snow Lake boys finished second after round robin play. They took on and beat Gillam in the semi-finals, only to come up short against a strong team from Wabowden in the final. Besides the volleyball taking place during the weekend, the school's cross-country running team participated in the zones competition, which was held in Grand Rapids. After playing the first two matches with the Sr. Girls Volleyball Team in Snow Lake, Ashton Lief left for Grand Rapids, where she finished second in the Sr. Girls zone. She would have won the race had she not turned her ankle on the home stretch and ended up hobbling to the finish line. Additionally, in the Jr. Boys race, Lyle Leclair finished with a respectable sixth place showing. On a more solemn note, former residents Harvey Bauhs and his mother Maria were in Snow Lake on Sunday the 5th. They brought father and husband, Joe Bauhs' ashes back to the community and in a private observance of his life, they spread them in one of his many favorite spots in the area. Afterwards, friends and acquaintances gathered at the Seniors' Center for a wonderful lunch, prepared and put out by the Senior Ladies. For all who knew him, Joe was a tireless and selfless promoter of Snow Lake. He worked hard, over a period of many years, towards upgrading and adding to the numerous amenities present citizens enjoy. He will be missed.
