Residents of Snow Lake received some sad news last week with the passing of long-time area resident, Milty Roberts. Roberts, a commercial fisher and trapper, was born and raised in Herb Town, and he continued to live there long after the community's mines failed and others moved away. For many years, he was the community's only inhabitant. It was for his commitment to Herb Town and refusal to leave his home that Milty became affectionately known as the Mayor of that community. Several years ago, along with my wife and some friends, I was fortunate enough to have Milty give a guided tour of the old streets of Herb Town. Although he wasn't able to make the trek throughout the entire town site, he did point out where many of the storied buildings of long ago sat. Milty passed away on December 4, 2003 in the Snow Lake Health Center, at the age of 67. A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. on December 8, in Snow Lake's Anglican/ United Church. The Reverend Clare Edwards presided and interment followed at the Brookside Cemetery. Here is an update on an early morning accident on the Osborne Lake Road. Corporal Bob MacKnight of the Snow Lake RCMP Detachment advises that as a result of there being reasonable and probable grounds to make a blood demand from the adult female, who was believed to be the driver of the single vehicle involved in the rollover accident, charges of driving a vehicle with over 80 mgs/liter blood and impaired driving were laid. "The required samples of blood were obtained and forwarded to the RCMP's Winnipeg Forensic Lab, for analysis," said MacKnight. "This determined that at the time that the samples were obtained, the driver's blood alcohol content was in excess of the legal limit. As a result, her driver's license was immediately suspended for 90 days pending a court appearance." The corporal reports that the driver appeared in Provincial Court in Cranberry Portage on October 27 and entered a plea of guilty to Drive Over. She received a $1,000 fine and a one year prohibition from operating motor vehicles, anywhere in Canada. The charge of Impaired Driving was stayed.
