Recently, the grades 6 and 8 students at J. H. Kerr School put together some distinctive and amusing work, while learning the basics of how an author generates mood in writing. Drawing on their own perception, their proficiency with technology, and a sprinkling of musical talent, the students first randomly drew a mood out of a hat. Then each of them took home a digital camera with an assignment to capture a photo that would communicate their chosen mood. Once they had the photo, they enhanced and manipulated it with a computer program called Corel Paint. The idea being that the finished photo would then better express their assigned mood. Once this enhancement was done, the photo was given to the grade 6 students, who composed music to match the mood. The results of this compilation were then posted on a bulletin board in the school and to a Web site, which people can visit to view and listen to the students' work. This is one more of the many exciting examples of the use of technology within the classrooms at Frontier's J.H. Kerr School. That site is: http://www.jhk.mb.ca/mood. Still on the topic of J.H. Kerr, several grades 5 - 9 athletes from the school recently traveled to Moose Lake to take part in the Area 4 Frontier games. The contingent took part in ping-pong, snowshoeing, floor hockey, and badminton. Ping-pong players, Lindy Sass, Kayla Byblow, and Bradie Wiwcharuk-Roy made it to the quarterfinals before bowing out. Under extremely cold conditions, Kayla Donaldson and Ashley McCartney placed second in girls doubles snowshoeing, while Nicky Norlock and Jonathon Young placed second in the boys doubles. Both teams will advance to the Divisional Frontier Games, which will be held in Cranberry Portage in March 2004. Both of the school's floor hockey teams did well but came up short against some bigger and older competition. And both Nicky Norlock and Jessie Drews competed in singles badminton. Miss Drews made it to the semi-finals in the event. In other news, in light of a rash of complaints the Town of Snow Lake recently sent out a mailer to the citizens of the community explaining their snow removal procedure. The mailer, which included a map of snow removal routes, noted that the white stuff is removed from major arteries first and then the remainder of the town is cleaned on a three area rotational basis. Also part of the mailer was a notice that due to constraint, effective January 1, 2004, the Town Office will begin closing to the public on Mondays. The staff will continue to work while the doors are closed and it is felt that this will allow them to stay on top of their duties without having to replace a casual person that left the position two months back. It was also noted that this closure will only affect the Town Office, all other Town departments will operate on Mondays.
