On Friday October 24, the Wilfred T. Lipton Arena saw the first competitive hockey of the season, when the Cranberry/Snow Lake Winterhawks hosted the Split Lake Eagles for some entertaining 'AA' midget action. The rink was full (like it should be all of the time) and those in the stands were really into the game. However, this ended up being the visiting team's night. The Winterhawks were bested 12-2 in the one sided affair. Nevertheless, it proves we can still get people into the building, win or lose. Most in attendance were looking forward to the local team's next home action. At a recent Town Council Meeting, Town Administrator, Chuck Dunning presented council with a design and cost estimate for two, eight-foot by twelve-foot signs that will advertise the lots at the Taylor Bay cabin subdivision. The cost for both signs and installation will be approximately $4,000 and will simply state, "Win a cabin lot snowlake.com". The signs will be located west of Winnipeg and positioned so that they will catch the traffic from both directions between Portage La Prairie and Winnipeg. The promotion will direct people to the town's web site, where after viewing purchase information on Taylor Bay's lots, visitors will be offered a chance to win one of the subdivision's interior lots. The Council gave their approval for the promotion. Snow Lake's RCMP Detachment is crediting the federal firearms registration program with the recovery of several stolen firearms over the past few months. Corporal Bob MacKnight stated that recently Winnipeg Police advised them of a Snow Lake resident who was in possession of a firearm, which had been stolen during a 1996 residential break-in, in Winnipeg. "With the co-operation of the current owner, the firearm was recovered and has been forwarded to the Winnipeg Police, for return to the lawful owner," said MacKnight. He added that this investigation continues. The Snow Lake RCMP have also been made aware of the recovery of a firearm, belonging to a local resident, which was stolen 20 years ago, while the resident was in BC. Both were recovered as the result of the requirement to have all firearms properly registered. Still on the RCMP and a theft that was reported in this column several weeks back. The RCMP reports that as result of that press release, the detachment received a call from an individual who admitted that they were responsible for the theft of a Rice Boat propeller. "The person, for good reason, believed that the boat had been abandoned, not having been moved for the past several years," said Corporal MacKnight. "The Propeller has since been recovered and returned to Mr. Hornyak and based upon all of the circumstances, the incident would not qualify as a theft," he added.
