The Value of the Soul Pastor Lorne Moorhead Northern Fellowship Chapel In a world of violence the death of one person doesn't seem very significant. In the past year deaths in natural disasters have been mind numbing. To these can be added the deaths inflicted by terrorists and in wars too numerous to mention. In Canada brutal murders occur regularly and we know the silent deaths of thousands of unborn babies continues unabated. T.V. violence only adds to the mix. We need the Bible to teach us the value of one soul. 1. One soul is worth more than the whole world. "What is a man profited if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul?" (Matthew 16:26) For a person to make wealth and pleasures of this world his main interest and neglect the salvation of his soul is the greatest tragedy imaginable. 2. The worth of a soul is measured by the awesomeness of its doom in Hell. "Depart from Me - into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels." (Matthew 25:41) Does it mean that the person consigned to Hell is worthless? No, the fact that God must punish the unrepentant soul means it has value. It is not a "O". If it was a worthless entity, God would not punish, He would just end its existence. It is because we are created in the image of God as free moral agents that we get significance and worth. 3. The soul is so valued that God sent His beloved Son to bear the sin, the guilt and the penalty we deserve. We are guilty of the sin of violating the holy law of God and offending God Himself. To save the human soul that has gone astray, God took the extreme measure of sending Jesus Christ to die in our place on the cross of Calvary - in real time. Let us never lose sight of the value of one human life.7/3/05
