Mother's Day Pastor Lorne Moorhead Northern Fellowship Chapel We observe Mother's Day because of the efforts of Anna Jarvis. When her mother died in 1908 she asked her minister to hold a memorial service. That service was held on May 10, 1908 in a church in Philadelphia. Anna persuaded the minister to hold a service every following year to honour the mothers in that church. Other congregations copied the idea and it spread to other cities in the U.S.A. Because of Anna Jarvis' love for her mother, and with three years of hard work, which included writing hundreds of letters to members of the U.S. Congress, to governors, to business leaders and ministers, and attending dozens of meetings, she finally had the day adopted as a national observance. On May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. It was established for "public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country." Mother's Day was such a good idea that it was soon adopted by Canada and has spread to many other countries of the world. Love finds a way to overcome difficulties. In 1976 a young mother had to appear in court. The Dept. of Social Welfare of the state of Pennsylvania believed she was not capable of caring for her five-month-old son, just because she had no arms or legs. She had to appear before Judge Edward Rosenburg to prove she was capable. The packed court room watched in silence and amazement as a mother's love went into action. The mothers, using only her lips and tongue, undressed and then dressed the baby. The judge ordered that she keep her baby. When love faces difficulty and hardship it doesn't give up, it finds a way. God's love is great. He so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son. God found a way to save that which was lost. Jesus willingly came into the world to suffer and die on the cross. It was love that led Him to Calvary. Seeking the lost at uttermost cost love led Him to Calvary.7/5/04
