Pastor Brian Gold Flin Flon Pentecostal Assembly Did you ever wonder why David, when he went down to fight Goliath, picked up five stones? After all, if his faith was working, only one stone would be necessary. Turns out that Goliath had four brothers, whom David was just as prepared to meet and chop down, too. David was faithful to use what he had in his hand, a slingshot that accompanied him as he attended his father's sheep. One speaker I heard a few weeks ago talked about five big problems that our world is experiencing, that only faith in a big God will defeat. He lists them as follows a) Spiritual emptiness - people do not know about the benefits of a relationship with the God of the Bible and His Son, Jesus Christ; b) Egocentric Leadership - many leaders are self-serving, not self-giving, and would rather not get rid of problems that plague humanity everyday; c) poverty - half of plant earth citizens live on less than 3 Cdn. per day. As has been said recently, "make poverty history!" d) Disease - huge problem, yet could be overcome, as cures and vaccinations are available for things such as poor drinking water, polio, tuberculosis, etc. A lack of leadership and will are especially missing here. e) Illiteracy - Half of our world is functionally illiterate. Big problems, no doubt. But I wonder what difference we can make in our small part of God's creation. Are we concerned about the poverty and illiteracy we see on our streets? Do we have the will to help those who are burdened down, or the child next door that could use some help with her homework? What is in your hand that can help? What talents do you possess that can make a world of difference with the problems that are self-evident right where we live? May God grant us the wisdom to help those who are much less well off in our own world, right here in our corner.
