The Potter By Rev. Jack Mulholland, Flin Flon Alliance Church Imagine for a moment the following monologue. Ouch! I donÕt like the way youÕre pressing and squeezing me. ThatÕs to work out the air bubbles so I wonÕt crack later on, you say. You wouldnÕt throw me on that moving wheel, would you? It is spinning so fast, IÕm not ready for anything like that yet. But you are ready and thatÕs all that matters. Hey, donÕt you think about my feelings at all? Check out the scars on the PotterÕs hands. And oh, yeah, I donÕt like being this shape and while you are at it, I am not fond of the colour of the glaze. If you ask me it isnÕt at all becoming of me. Oh, you didnÕt ask me! Surely you are not going to make me just another one of many ordinary pots, are you? I had pictured me as something unique, a priceless object of art. Wait a minute! You were not planning to put me in the kiln, were you? ItÕs hot in there and if I do survive the oven, I will never be the same again! That was your plan from the beginning, you say? To make me strong and useable, a jar to hold Living Water. That the Excellency of the power may be of God and not of me. I think I am beginning to see, a little bit. Sounds to me like some conversations IÕve had with God. But it really isnÕt the monologue it appears. Listen to St. Paul from Romans 9:20-21... ÒShall what is formed say to him who formed it, why do you make me like this? Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use?Ó Our response should be like that in our hymn books, ÒHave Thine Own Way, Lord. Have Thine Own Way.Ó
