LIVING WATER Rev. Jack Mulholland We might value water more if we had to carry it in jars from the edge of town, bearing on our shoulders all the water our household needed each day. But even we who take our abundant water supply for granted can attest to the fact that on a hot day, nothing quenches thirst like a cold glass of water, no matter what the beverage advertisers would have us think. Another luxury that not all people of all cultures have been able to enjoy is that of frequent bathing - the opportunity to become clean! What a gift it is to be able to wash. How vital water is for all that grows on the earth: trees, plants, flowers, grass, fruits, vegetables, grains. They would all die if it were not for water. And consider the power of moving water. It alters and erodes river banks and shorelines. Sometimes the energy from falling water has been harnessed to provide electricity for entire towns and cities. Buoyancy is something we are sometimes inclined to forget about water. A good swimming instructor tells the student to Òswim through the water and not struggle to get above it. The water itself will hold you up if you let it.Ó Where water is abundant, people have found ways to transport themselves and their goods on it. Children of all ages enjoy playing in water. Jesus said, Òhe would give us Living Water.Ó (Gospel of John 4:10) Often we have fought and struggled, trying to hold ourselves up in our own strength. We fail to appropriate the fact that as we rest in Jesus, our Living Water, letting Him hold us up. Jesus said, ÒHe who believes in me will never be thirsty.Ó (Gospel of John 6:35) We need to set aside our empty pails and trust Jesus Christ our Living Water to provide a quenching to our thirsty souls. In doing so He will cleanse us of our sin and we will be awed at the power available to us.Ó Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the Living Water. (Isa. 55:1)
