2004 May 3 Ð The province has committed $4.8 million towards the reconstruction of the main road artery through Flin Flon. The work on Highway 10A is slated to begin next year and will follow the route along Third Avenue up to Main Street and then down Main to the Saskatchewan border. "It's another step toward our community being open for business and looking like a prosperous community," said Mayor Dennis Ballard. "God knows this is something we deserve. We're due. It's our turn. May 4 Ð HBMS's efforts to reduce air contaminants continue to show results but more can be done to address the situation, according to Dave Bezak, a provincial air quality specialist. May 12 Ð Anglo American, the parent company of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting, is appraising the value of its Flin Flon operation with a view toward a potential sale. "This does not imply in any way that they contemplate closure if a sale is not successfully concluded," said Tom Goodman, vice president of Technical Services and Human Resources for HBMS. "Mining properties, companies, and divisions restructure and change hands regularly," he added. May 13 Ð Snow Lake has been dealt a grave blow with the announcement that the New Britannia gold mine will close later this year, leaving about 170 workers at the town's largest employer without jobs. May 14 Ð In an effort to keep up with demand, the Manitoba government will soon make a total of 23 new cottage lots available at Big Island, Sourdough Bay and the Millwater subdivision. May 17 Ð The inquest into the 2000 smelter explosion remains on hold. HBMS has appealed Justice Brenda Keyser's dismissal of a previous appeal to have inquest council Marty Minuk turn over transcripts of interviews he conducted with workers involved in the accident. May 21 Ð More than half a century of tradition has come to an end with the Willow Park Curling Club's decision to amalgamate with the Uptown Curling Club. Willow Park members have voted 61 per cent in favour of moving to the Uptown rink beginning this fall. May 26 Ð The Rotary Club of Flin Flon plans to proceed with a new seniors housing complex now that the Manitoba government has committed $1 million to the project. The proposed three-storey, 38-suite facility is to be built at the Rotary Court site beginning as soon as August. "We did some research and found there was definite need for seniors' housing," said Ted Hewitt, the club's president.
