2004 March 1 Ð Mother Nature smiled on Denare Beach over the weekend, providing the perfect setting for the hundreds of people who enjoyed the 26th Annual Denare Beach Winter Festival. "You couldn't ask for better weather for a winter festival," smiled Natasha Thomson, Denare Beach recreation director. "It was wintery with lots of snow but it was nice and mild. I knew the weather would be good because it was so cold for last year's festival I thought it could only be warm this year." March 2 Ð The Pattie Evans rink went undefeated through the weekend to win the Arctic Beverages Main Event in the Flin Flon/Creighton Ladies Bonspiel. Curling with Pattie were Barb Groff, Cindy Rainville and Sharlyne Rutley. Ð Otto Olson was dealt an amazing cribbage hand at the friendship Centre on Sunday afternoon. Otto scored a 29 hand, in a game played on February 29th! March 4 Ð A landmark building could become the uptown area's newest apartment complex. A local resident has asked Flin Flon City Council to rezone the former Northminster Memorial United Church on Hill Street to accommodate multiple family dwellings. "It would be nice to see something done with that building," said Councillor Dave Law. "It's something that's stood in Flin Flon for a long time. If it could be renovated to a residential dwelling it would give life to the uptown area." March 8 Ð The Flin Flon Bombers closed out the 2003-04 season with a 5-2 win over the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Friday night at the Whitney Forum, finishing the year with 17 wins, 28 losses, 12 ties. March 9 Ð A Regina-based exploration company will spend $250,000 to further examine land outside of Creighton that could one day play an important role in the local mining industry. Seagrove Capital Corporation has optioned a separate company to conduct drilling and geophysical work on a prospect located along the Hanson Lake Road in the Beatty Lake area, 12 kilometres west of the HBMS smelter. March 15 Ð Flin Flonners can expect to see a lot of new faces around town, as the community will soon have a regular air link with the remote northern Manitoba community of Pukatawagan. As of next month, Bakers Narrows Air Service will offer three flights a week to and from the community of about 1,500 people. March 23 Ð Rod Gourlay's rink captured top spot in the 72nd Annual Men's Bonspiel this past weekend, winning the HBMS/Flin Flon Insurance Main Event. Curling with Doug were Ralph Ellingson, Randy Beever and Bruce Gallay. March 26 Ð Jason Robinson is up to his winning ways again. The former Flin Flonner took home three gold medals from the 2004 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games, held last month in Charlottetown, P.E.I. Now a Winnipeg resident, Robinson won gold in the 5, 7.5 and 10 kilometre classic cross-country ski races at the Games.
