Question: With more cottage lots opening in places like Cranberry and the lake areas, and with more residential lots having opened / are set to open in Creighton, how does council expect Flin Flon to retain its population? Mayor Therien: Your question regarding lots opening up in Cranberry, the lake area and Creighton is a good one and not easy to answer. First off, I do not believe Cranberry is an issue that will greatly affect Flin Flon. The surrounding cottage area has always concerned council as there seems to be a never-ending stream of people moving out to the lake on a permanent basis. Creighton does concern us, but the lots they are offering cheap require you to put a lot of money out to bring the lot up to speed so you can develop your house. Now, people are still taking advantage of that and I guess that is good for Creighton. Flin Flon has seen, in resent years, a number of housing starts, especially in the Roche and Murton area, as well as a few other areas in town. Our development is spread out so it does not give you the impression of much going on. As well, we still have lots available throughout town and of all sizes. To create a brand new subdivision requires a lot of money up front from city hall, money we do not have at this moment. We have had serious discussions of where council could go in this direction, both on a large and a small scale. As for retaining population, I do not see this as a huge problem. It seems that when someone leaves, someone else moves in. It is one big revolving door, if you will. * * * Question: Does the city have any plans to fix up South Hudson St., and when? It's in rough shape. Mayor Therien: I can honestly say that council has plans to fix up most roads within our city. However, the total cost to do everything necessary to bring our roads up to speed far exceeds the funding that we have at this time. Of coarse, we could raise taxes to be able to do more, but that may not necessarily be what you want to hear. We did do repairs to South Hudson Street this past summer/fall season, but I know we could have done more, but without more money, we can only do what is deemed necessary. * * * Send your questions for Mayor Therien to The Reminder by phone at 687-3454, fax at 687-4473, e-mail at [email protected] or standard delivery at "Ask the Mayor", C/O The Reminder, 14 North Avenue, Flin Flon, R8A 0T2.
