Question: If Flin Flon, Creighton and possibly others were to share a regional landfill, as has apparently been advocated by some of our elected officials, where would this landfill be located and what would the benefits be? Mayor Therien: Considering we are at a very preliminary stage in discussions about a regional landfill, there is not much I can tell you. Flin Flon is looking at some major changes in regards to how we run our landfill, most of which is being directed from the provincial government. It only makes sense to explore other options. We have always been open to sharing services with our neighbours with the ultimate benefit being reduced costs to our taxpayers. There is also a big movement to regional landfills throughout Manitoba, with environmental concerns being the main driver, as well as reduced costs. * * * Question: With so many taxpayers and voters owning dogs, why does the city refuse to establish a dog park? Mayor Therien: I do not believe the city REFUSES to establish a dog park, we simply have far more pressing concerns/problems to deal with at this time. Your assumption is that all dogs will use this park and I am not sure this would be the case. I see a lot of people out walking their dogs throughout the city and I really do not see this changing anytime soon. This issue about a park has been voiced by a couple of people but does not seem to be the opinion of many others, hence the apprehension to developing a dog park. If there was a significant number of people interested, I am sure council would take another look at it but, again, money and, this time, available space would play a role in the decision to build a park. * * * Send your questions for Mayor Therien to The Reminder by phone at 687-3454, fax at 687-4473, e-mail at [email protected] or standard delivery at "Ask the Mayor", C/O The Reminder, 14 North Avenue, Flin Flon, MB, R8A 0T2.
