Owen Hargeaves, the Calgarian who makes a living playing for Bayern Munich of the German Bundesliga, is set to move to Manchester United of the English Premier League. Hargeaves, who was rejected as not being good enough by the Canadian youth coaches, has been a star in Europe for several seasons and was the player of the tournament when playing for England in this year's World Cup. * * * As I write this article, sod is being laid on the new soccer field in Creighton. This will be laid in two phases, with the second phase being tomorrow, Tuesday the 22nd. If you would like to volunteer for a couple of hours, please show up at the new field site, behind the town offices, any time after 8 a.m. This is a great achievement for Creighton and for the youth of our area. Next year our kids will have a brand new, full size field to play the fastest growing sport in the world. Well done, Creighton. * * * It was a tough weekend for six Flin Flon Fury players. In what promised to be a weekend of championship soccer in the Brandon Coca-Cola Classic Soccer Tournament, two of the Fury players who played for Northern United, the Northern Manitoba all-star team, suffered injuries. Goalkeeper Jacquelyn Spence suffered a possible fracture of her right arm, and left-sided defender Kyrra Kosar was treated in hospital for concussion. Jacquelyn reported for training with the Hapnot Kweens on Tuesday, but obviously could only take part in the speed, agility and reaction training. A further X-ray of the arm is scheduled for this week to determine the extent of the injury. Kyrra, who spent the first few days of this week in Brandon, is recovering well, but with a concussion, healing time is everything. A further assessment will also be made on Kyrra this week. * * * The English Premier league started Saturday, with another season of superstar studded soccer to look forward to. Arsenal played their first game in the brand new Emirates stadium against Aston Villa. Villa has just been bought by U.S. billionaire Michael Lerner, owner of the NFL's Cleveland Browns. With Lerner ready to spend the big bucks, it is rumoured his investment in Villa could even match the millions of Chelsea's Roman Abrovomich's. Things have never looked so good for Villa. The players now know that if they play below expectation, they will be replaced very quickly. On Sunday, the mighty reds of Manchester United entertained Fulham at Old Trafford in what should have been an easy win. Chelsea were at home to Man City, where newly appointed England Captain John Terry will lead the blue superstars against a City team that never really seems to hit the big time. Liverpool play Sheffield United in what could be the first upset of the new season. Traditionally, newly-promoted teams do very well in their first few games, before discovering that maintaining the standard required at the top flight is very difficult. Wigan Athletic, who were promoted last year, spent the first couple of weeks of their premiership life at the top of the table before dropping down and finishing the season in a mid-table position. * * * Training continues for our very own Hapnot Kweens. The first few weeks are the hardest as we concentrate on stamina, speed and agility training. We have been joined by a couple of the Hapnot boys who are anxious to get started on their pre-season schedule. If any other boys want to join us for training, just show up at 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 11 a.m. on Sundays at Phantom Lake soccer field. Alternatively, I can run a session or two for you if you want; just let me know. Until next week Ð keep on kicking.
