Local soccer news Fundraising for the new soccer park has reached almost $50,000 towards our target of $75,000 in only two months, including a $10,000 donation from the Rotary Club of Flin Flon. You can see detailed plans of the location and also make a donation at the Trade and Leisure Show being held at the Sportex at the end of April. It is hoped that groundwork can begin this year, with sod being laid next year. Unfortunately vandalism has struck Phantom Lake soccer field once more. The new washrooms have been 'decorated' with graffiti. The three doors and West wall have been daubed with yellow paint. Fresh paint will be applied and it is hoped to have it perfect before play resumes. The new Creighton soccer field will become a reality as soon as the weather cooperates and sod is laid. One fear of course is vandalism of the playing surface. Let's hope that sense wins over idiocy. This will be a full size field and personally I can't wait. We should make it a special event, any ideas out there? If so, contact Cindy at the Creighton Town Office. We do need more coaches and referees for the senior divisions. If you are interested in divisions four and five, contact myself or any executive member of the Phantom Lake Soccer Club. Missing in this area of course is an adult league. Are there any volunteers who want to organize one? We have many adults in our community who have played soccer through their school years and a lot of former players express interest. The Phantom girls team will be holding try outs in the next couple of weeks. This is one of Flin Flon's traveling teams who train three times a week and enter out of town tournaments. It looks as if they might be playing in the U18 age group this season, though U16 is also possible depending on numbers. Many of the players are on the Hapnot Collegiate school roster, so this age group is certainly nothing to fear even for the younger players, last years high school zones proved that. There will be a final roster of 18 players and details of the try out location and times will be. Kirkham's coaching tip of the week Ð heading basics The ability to head the ball is a vital skill for players in every position. The forehead is used for heading the ball, NEVER use the top of your head. Positioning and timing are crucial. The most important thing to remember is to keep your eyes on the ball and get yourself into the line of flight. Generate power by bending the knees, arching the back, thrusting your head and body forward on impact, and keeping your neck muscles tense. Use your arms for balance as you will be in the air for most of your headers. However be careful not to wave them around or obstruct other payers. Try to head the ball at the highest part of the jump and directly above the eyebrows, be positive when contact is made keeping your eyes open. Provincial soccer news Saskatoon Youth Soccer Association announced that they have been granted the 2006 Canadian Girls All Star championships. The championships will run from July 19-23 at the new soccer center located on Attridge Drive and will feature the best U14/U16 players in the country. Canadian soccer news Twenty-five-year-old Kelly Parker from Saskatoon has re-signed with the Ottawa Fury of the W-League. Parker is also the assistant coach of the women's soccer program at the University of Texas and is now in her third year with the Fury. Last year the Fury were runners up in the W-League final losing to the New Jersey Wildcats. International Calgarian Owen Hargreaves, superstar midfielder with Bayern Munich of the German League is fit again following a long term groin injury and looks certain to play for England in this year's World Cup. Owen was eligible to play for three countries; Wales the home of his mother, Canada, his birthplace and England, the home of his father. He originally tried out for Canada, but was dropped from the youth team. When England came calling he decided immediately to play for them, secured a spot on the Munich team, became a superstar in Europe and an international star with England. Disaster hit the Kirkham household when the mighty reds of Manchester United could only tie with lowly Sunderland in the English Premier League on Easter Saturday. Even though they beat the Spurs 2-1 in the Easter Monday game, Chelsea also defeated Everton, leaving a single point required by Chelsea to win the crown for another year. Until next week Ð keep on kicking
