Kenton Staines only scored one big goal the entire season for the Flin Flon Bombers. Though the 5-11, 185 pound winger from Winnipeg is a key player on the team, others got the limelight from the media, especially print. Where Staines stands out is for his actions off the ice, and he was rewarded for that during the organization's annual awards banquet last Saturday. For his dedication to students in Nathalie Roussin's Grade one and two French immersion class at McIsaac School Ecole McIsaac, Staines was recognized with the Diane Krokosz Memorial Award for Most Gentlemanly Player. As Bombers coach-GM Doug Stokes began to describe the winning recipient, sitting near his father, Russell, we both knew who the hardware was going to. In winning this award, Staines proved he's a great ambassador for the Bombers. Nothing against his teammates, but Staines went the distance. As he said during an interview that night, he loved his job Ð he would do it again, no questions asked. The kids at the school love him. In fact, before returning home to Winnipeg this past Wednesday, Staines visited his good friend, Isaac Jays, who is a student in Roussin's class, and bought him an Edmonton Oilers toque and hockey cards. To Isaac, Staines is his best friend. They spent quality time together and Staines took Isaac out for ice cream. That pretty much keeps the Bomber forward in Isaac's good books for life. Roussin said that Staines did more than expected and was very patient with each student. She was even impressed with how well he speaks French. Staines helped each student with their school work and gave them equal attention. Hopefully for Staines and the organization, when the 2006-07 season begins, Staines will be part of it and continue where he left off.
