2004 June 2 Ð The aging Flin Flon Aqua Centre has a "very limited life", the Chamber of Commerce heard yesterday. Ron Watt, chairman of the proposed Community Plex project, told the chamber at their luncheon meeting that the poor condition of the pool facility is what prompted talk of the need for a new multi-purpose recreational centre. June 4 Ð After six years on the beat in Creighton and Denare Beach, Creighton RCMP Sgt. Mark LeMaistre is leaving for his hometown of Winnipeg. "I don't find the crime rate very high here," he said. "I find the young people quite respectful. I think Creighton and Flin Flon are closely knit." June 7 Ð Cranberry Portage was dealt a blow over the weekend when flames consumed the Gas Trax gas station and convenience store at the south end of town. Owner Mike Petryk said he hopes to see reconstruction on a new facility beginning next month. Petryk, who lived at the store, narrowly escaped the flames and was pulled to safety through a window around 7 a.m. by four out-of-town visitors waiting for the gas station to open. The facility had first opened as the Centennial Motel in 1967. June 9 Ð Work is underway on the final phase of Flin Flon's new $9.4 million sewage treatment plant, located behind the headworks building on Boundary Avenue. "It will be a state of the art plant," said Director of Works and Operations Kevin Komarnicki. June 11 Ð After months of speculation, clothing giant Mark's Work Wearhouse has confirmed it will build a new store at the Flintoba Shopping Centre. June 15 Ð Some of our four-legged friends are back in town, as the Joe Brain Children's Petting Zoo recently opened for another summer. "It's always an interesting experience to come to the zoo," said supervisor Barb Elliott. June 17 Ð About half as many Flin Flon students are lighting up compared to a decade ago, Superintendent of Schools Blaine Veitch estimates. "I think part of it is better education of children who understand the health risks that are involved," he said. "Also, when there are fewer people in general smoking, then children have less role models in that area." June 21 Ð Rotary Park is undergoing a $30,000 facelift this summer complete with picnic tables, an overhead water sprinkler for the wading pool, and a shade structure. The Rotary Club opened the park nearly 70 years ago. June 28 Ð The Manitoba government has confirmed that it will soon be seeking tenders to rebuild the Hemlock seniors apartment complex. The south portion of the apartment building was destroyed by fire on June 6, 2002. June 30 Ð With mainly sunshine forecasted in the upcoming days, the 54th Annual Flin Flon Trout Festival is set to provide fun for the whole family. "The theme this year is community pride," said Greg East, the festival president. "Come out and enjoy your community."
