2004 July 5 Ð This year's Trout Festival, along with the Canada Day activities, provided lots of fun for everyone over the weekend. "It went phenomenally well," said a pleased festival president, Greg East. "We felt our attendance was up from last year and folks enjoyed the events, which was what we were hoping for." Ð The RH Channing Auditorium was packed last night with parents and friends of the 12 girls who were running for this year's Trout Festival Queen Mermaid contest. The 2004 Queen Mermaid is Michelle Pettersen with First Princess Kelsey Watt and Second Princess Shaleen Baribeau. July 6 Ð An historic plaque that has stood the test of time in the bush alongside the rail line just north of Cranberry Portage, can now be seen at the Flin Flon Library. The plaque was attached to a 10-foot high rock cairn by the famous Canadian construction foreman, Harry Falconer McLean, in 1928 when he supervised the building of the rail line. It was dedicated to the men who worked for McLean. July 14 Ð Major construction and renovation work is underway at Creighton Community School to accommodate more students and enhance the learning environment. The centrepiece of the project is the addition of three new classrooms and a state-of-the-art science lab, all of which will be used by the school's new high school program The total price tag for the work is approximately $1.76 million. July 19 Ð Twenty-one people can look forward to developing new cottage lots at Big Island, Sourdough Bay, or the Millwater subdivision. The province has opened up new lots in response to a strong demand for them. "I've heard that there's a big demand for these cottage lots," said Mayor Dennis Ballard. "I've heard people say, 'If this government wants to do something for me, get me a cottage lot.'" July 20 Ð Gas prices have come down after reaching surprisingly high rates in late May. The average price of this area yesterday was 87.5 cents a litre. The average price in May was 97.4 cents. July 21 Ð The northwest corner of the Flin Flon Community Hall parking lot was fenced off yesterday in preparation for construction of a new multi-health facility. The NOR-MAN Regional Health Authority will be leasing the facility as a place for its primary programs such as Public Health, Mental Health and the Community Nurse Resource Centre. July 23 Ð Flin Flon's famous skyline is getting a new look as workers coat the top portion of the Smoke Stack with a protective black paint. The collar of the stack is already protected by the special paint. Now, work is underway to extend the coating further down to protect the concrete when winds draw the stack emissions downward. July 29 Ð A Robin's Donuts restaurant will not be coming to the Flintoba Shopping Centre, afterall. Plans to build a 2,200 sq. ft. outlet were canceled when no one could be found to become the franchisee.
