2004 January 6 Ð North of 53 Consumers Co-op has closed its snack bar to make way for an expansion of the baker, deli and produce selections. The board of directors voted to close the snack bar, which has lost more than $64,000 over the past three years. January 13 - A provincial inquiry into the 2000 explosion at HBMS got underway this morning in the Flin Flon Courtroom. The inquiry began hearings to investigate the events that surrounded the explosion of August 8, 2000, which resulted in the death of one worker and injured 13 others. Ð The Northern Store in Snow Lake closed its doors for good, this past Saturday. It is believed the store first opened in 1948. "It was a sad day for me," said assistant manager Margie Cockle, a 26 year employee with the store. "There were a lot of people come in to say thanks, some with flowers and baking. It certainly shows that you have done something over the years that people have appreciated." January 16 Ð Flin Flon MP Bev Desjarlais has secured the NDP nomination for the Churchill constituency, hoping to represent Northern Manitoba in Parliament for the third consecutive term. "I'm enjoying the job," said Desjarlais, a Thompson resident. "I've had great support from the communities and people in the riding. I'm looking forward to going at it one more time, for sure." January 19 Ð The Flin Flon and District Environment Council will assume operation of the Flin Flon Landfill on February 1. The new landfill staff to be hired by the environmental council will keep their eyes peeled to separate the non-recyclables from the recyclables. To start with, they will be paying particular attention to cardboard which "takes up a surprising amount of space at the landfill," according to Doreen Murray, administrator of the recycling centre. January 20 Ð Some local establishments are bracing for a hit in their bottom line this year as they look ahead to the provincial smoking ban set to take effect by October. "It will hurt for awhile," said Ryan Thorgilsson, owner of the Chicken Chef restaurant. "It will take a little while for people to get used to it. When it will hurt the most is during coffee times. We have a very substantial coffee crowd." January 22 Ð Animal advocate Debbie Hiebert outlined an ambitious plan at Tuesday's City Council meeting regarding the building of an animal shelter to serve the Flin Flon and Creighton area. Hiebert said the local SPCA hopes to begin construction on a facility in the spring of 2005, if fundraising efforts are successful. "A well-run shelter says nice things about our community Ð that we care," she told members of council. Ð Since City Council decommissioned the uptown parking meters a year ago, they have been 'out of mind' for shoppers. Now, they will also be 'out of site' as council has voted unanimously to remove all meters and tender them for sale.
