New York - The United Nations is warning that HIV infection rates for women and young girls are soaring in China, India and Russia, putting tens of millions of people at risk. "There is something new and ominous in the course of this epidemic," Peter Piot, the head of the UN AIDS program, told reporters on Tuesday. Many women in Asia and Eastern Europe are afraid to search out information about prevention or treatment because they fear violence from men in their communities, Piot said. About 40 million people are now living with HIV, the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome, and the number is growing nearly 10 per cent each year. Kiev - The two opponents for Ukraine's presidency met for talks Wednesday, hours after the parliament brought down the government with a no-confidence motion. According to the country's constitution, outgoing Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma must now dismiss the government and appoint an interim one. Tehran - Just a day after reaching an agreement with three European powers to suspend its uranium enrichment activities, Iran says the suspension will only be temporary. A spokesperson for The United States, which believes Iran is still pursuing a nuclear weapons program, said Tuesday that Tehran was playing a dangerous game.
