Washington - Colin Powell has resigned as the U.S. secretary of state, insisting Monday that he was not forced out by the administration of President George W. Bush. The retired four-star general, who submitted his resignation to Bush on Friday, said he feels that the administration has "accomplished a great deal" over the past four years. It had been previously rumoured that Powell would step down if Bush won a second term. Vienna - Iran's promise to stop enriching uranium, offered on the weekend to head off threatened sanctions, has the support of the United Nations nuclear watchdog. Iran's promise was part of a deal announced on Sunday in which the European Union said it would help the country develop nuclear energy. The United States has been putting pressure on Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment program for months. Las Vegas - Forty-three members of a Cuban theatrical production in Las Vegas plan to seek asylum in the United States, said the show's founder. The dancers, singers and musicians are part of the Havana Night Club show, which plays at the Stardust Resort and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. Seven other cast members currently in Germany also plan to return to the U.S. and seek asylum. Another three plan to return to Cuba. The Cuban government threatened troupe members, when they decided to go to Las Vegas, said the show's director.
