Mount St. Helens, Wash. - Mount St. Helens emitted a large plume of steam on Monday, with fears of an eruption rising as scientists estimated the width of the volcano's crater had expanded by 15 to 30 metres. Several quakes with a magnitude of 3 also shook the mountain in Washington state. Willy Scott of the U.S Geological Survey estimated that the massive cloud had risen to more than 3,000 metres above the mountain at 12:50 EDT. He said Mount St. Helens "could go into more substantial events at any moment." Scientists have estimated that there is a 70 per cent chance of the volcano erupting. Washington - With less than a month to go, the U.S. presidential campaign is suddenly re-energized following last week's debate. For Democratic hopeful John Kerry, who has been trailing President George Bush, there has been a boost. Democrats are excited about new polls showing the race is tightening, again. A Newsweek poll, for example, has Kerry leading Bush 47 per cent to 45 per cent, nationally. When the margin of error is figured in it means the election is a dead heat, just too close to call. Jakarta - Retired general Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has been declared winner of Indonesia's first-ever direct presidential election. He ran a campaign vowing to fix the economy and fight terrorism. The country was hit by three major attacks by Muslim militants including the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people.
