Washington - The war in Iraq raised mistrust of the United States among people in Europe and Muslim countries, according to a nine-country survey released Tuesday. The survey found that majorities in Germany, Turkey and France believe the invasion undermined the American "war on terrorism," a view that was shared by half of the British and Russians. "Solid majorities in France and Germany believe the U.S. is conducting the war on terrorism in order to control Mideast oil and dominate the world," according to the Pew Center. Baghdad - At least 27 people were killed and a hotel destroyed after a huge explosion shook central Baghdad on Wednesday. A huge crater, about six metres across and three metres deep, was blown out of the road outside the five-storey Mount Lebanon hotel, which was destroyed in the blast. U.S. military officials say some westerners may have been staying at the hotel. Las Vegas - Police arrested a man suspected of being the sniper who terrified Ohio drivers for 10 months, after tracking him down at a Las Vegas motel early Wednesday. Charles A. McCoy Jr., 28, was captured after someone in Las Vegas recognized him from media stories about the two dozen shootings near the city of Columbus, one of which killed a 62-year-old woman. Authorities named McCoy as their main suspect Monday and released his photo.3/18/2004
