Boston - The highest state court in Massachusetts ruled Tuesday that same-sex couples are legally entitled to wed under the state constitution, but stopped short of allowing marriage licences to be issued to the couples who challenged the law. The decision is the latest in a spate of victories for gay rights advocates, but fell short of what the seven couples who sued the state had hoped to receive: the right to marry their longtime companion. The Massachusetts question will now return to the legislature, which already is considering a constitutional amendment that would legally define a marriage as a union between one man and one woman. Tikrit, Iraq - U.S. fighter jets pounded suspected insurgent positions Tuesday in the largest bombardment of guerrillas in central Iraq since President George W. Bush declared the end of major combat in May, the U.S. military said. The U.S. military has reacted forcefully to an upsurge in guerrilla activity in central and northern Iraq. On Monday, six insurgents were killed in gunbattles and 99 suspects were reportedly detained in a series of sweeps. The Hague - The UN war crimes tribunal issued an indictment Tuesday against former Croatian Serb leader Milan Babic on five counts of war crimes for a campaign of ethnic cleansing in parts of Croatia early in the Balkan wars.
