San Francisco - California's Supreme Court nullified more than 4,000 same-sex marriages on Thursday, ruling that San Francisco exceeded its powers by issuing the licences this year. The court wrote that the city defied state law when it issued certificates and performed ceremonies for 4,037 gay and lesbian couples in February and March, when the court ordered the weddings to stop. The state legislation, supported by a voter referendum, defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Polls show that most Californians oppose gay marriage. Jeffrey Lee Parson could face 18 months to three years behind bars and be ordered to pay millions of dollars in restitution.
