Washington - Victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks have received $38.1 billion US in compensation so far from insurance companies, the U.S. government and charities, according to a study released Monday. The study shows $19.6 billion or 51 per cent of the money came from insurance companies, $15.8 billion or 42 per cent came from government and the remaining $2.7 billion or 7 per cent was distributed by charities. Businesses in New York City, particularly in lower Manhattan near the site of the World Trade Center, received $23.3 billion for property damage, disrupted operations and economic incentives. The families of civilians killed or people who were injured received an average payment of $3.1 million from all sources.
