London - Around 10,000 supporters of fox hunting marched on Parliament Square in London Wednesday as lawmakers debated banning the hunt. Prime Minister Tony Blair vowed to end fox hunts, which have been practised in Britain for more than 300 years, when he took power in 1997. Critics say the hunt with dogs, which ends with the fox being killed, is cruel and inhumane. Supporters of the hunt claim the bill would kill thousands of rural jobs. Kabul - Three Americans who said they were hunting for terrorists in Afghanistan were found guilty Wednesday for their role in torturing Afghans in a private jail. A three-judge panel sentenced two of the men, former Green Beret Jonathan Idema and ex-serviceman Brent Bennett, to 10 years in jail. A third man, New York journalist Edward Caraballo, was sentenced to eight years. The Americans had faced up to 20 years in jail on charges of kidnapping, torture, theft and illegal entry into Afghanistan. Beslan, Russia - Under tight security, teachers and children returned to classes in the Russian town of Beslan Wednesday, the first time since more than 300 people were killed following a three-day hostage-taking. Armed law enforcement officers dressed in camouflage met arriving students and teachers in the town's seven schools. Attendance was low and teachers said many parents kept students away.
