Peshawar, Pakistan - Soldiers have found several hidden tunnels in South Waziristan that al-Qaeda fighters may have used to escape a weeklong siege, a Pakistani military official said Monday. The tunnels, some more than a mile long, led from a fortified site in the mountainous region to a dry riverbed near the Afghanistan border, said the head of security for Pakistan's tribal regions, Mahmood Shah. "There is a possibility that the tunnel may have been used at the start of the operation," he told reporters. At least 5,000 Pakistani soldiers have been facing off against a suspected 500 militants from various nations since the siege began on March 16. Atlanta - Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter blasted British and U.S. leaders over the Iraq war Monday, telling a British newspaper that it was based on "lies and misinterpretations." Gaza CIty - The White House said it had no advance warning of the assassination of Hamas founder Sheik Ahmed Yassin, who died in an Israeli missile strike Monday. Yassin founded Hamas shortly after the Palestinian uprising of 1987, and was later convicted and jailed by Israeli authorities for planning attacks on civilians. He was released from an Israeli prison in 1997 as part of a deal to free Israeli agents from Jordan. He narrowly escaped an Israeli assassination attempt in September 2003.
