Question: Do you see Flin Flon as a tourist town, and if so, is there more the city can/should do to promote ourselves as such? Mayor Therien: I certainly think of Flin Flon and its surrounding area as a tourist delight. Our area is rich with its beauty and rustic wilderness and has a lot to offer to the outside world. Whether you are into hunting, fishing, canoeing or just about anything to do with an outdoor activity, this is certainly the place to be. Your question centered around promotion and the easy answer to this is, yes, we do promote this great area. With the help of Community Futures Greenstone, as well as the various lodge owner/operators, the community of Flin Flon and all we have to offer is greatly promoted through ads in various publications and through participation in various trade shows outside of Flin Flon. The City promotes itself in various publications as well. The idea is not for you to see it (you are already here) but for others to see it and get interested in Flin Flon as a tourist stop. Over the years, I have been truly amazed by the number of tourists that make a stop in Flin Flon, but then again, this is Canada's northern playground and it is okay to share its beauty. * * * Question: Over the winter, the city pushed a large amount of snow from public property onto my private property while clearing. The city has made it illegal for me to shovel that snow back onto the public property. What recourse do I and others who may experience this problem have? Mayor Therien: Without knowing what is being done or where it is being done, I would have a little trouble in answering your question. Generically, I would suggest you call City Hall or stop in to see them with your issue. If you get no satisfaction with that, feel free to contact myself or any councillor. With the weather being as great as it is, I would think snow would have been the furthest thing from anyone's mind, but it is a good question, one that needs to be handled in a timely manner. * * * Forward your questions for Mayor Therien to The Reminder by phone at 687-3454, fax at 687-4473, e-mail at [email protected] or standard delivery at "Ask the Mayor", C/O The Reminder, 14 North Avenue, Flin Flon, MB, R8A 0T2.
