Mother's Day is celebrated in many parts of the world, usually in either March or May. Mother's Day has its roots in the United States, where it was first celebrated in 1908. A woman named Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in the community of Grafton, West Virginia. Jarvis would later trademark the term 'Mother's Day' and establish the Mother's Day International Association. She successfully lobbied to make Mother's Day a holiday across America, and succeeded in 1914. Other countries followed in adopting the holiday and the welcome tradition of honouring moms was born! As Timeanddate.com notes: 'Some people give cards, flowers, or chocolates, and/or make handmade items or special meals on Mother's Day. Others take their mothers or mother figures to the movies, a restaurant, caf_, or a day in a park. Some mothers and mother figures also receive special gifts such as jewelry, clothing, accessories, and gift vouchers for services or products.' It's not all about buying gifts, of course... it's about taking time out to honour that special woman who brought us into this world!
