Eight rinks competed in the 2003 HBMS Warehouse Purchasing Department Bonspiel, an event for employees within the department and their spouses. "It wasn't about winning, it was about getting together and having a good time," commented Duke Rodnisky, president of the department's recreation club. "It went great." Each rink played three games with six ends, with the winner being whichever team could muster the most overall points. The Cassan rink, consisting of Bob Cassan, Tracy Fullowka, Cavin Ballard, Nadine Rideout, came out on top with a total of 24 points. Each member of the winning rink received a brand new sports bag. There was also a draw of about a dozen other prize packages for all of the participants, including a golf bag and driver, garden accessories and various household knickknacks. Following the bonspiel, the curlers gathered in the lounge upstairs for a hearty supper. The HBMS Warehouse Purchasing Dept. Bonspiel began in the 1960s and had been held annually up until about three years ago. The bonspiel was revived this year thanks to the work of organizers Cathy Mahoney and James Johnson. Jim Quinn, president of Willow Park, commented that 2002-03 was a successful year for the rink. "We had about 16 to 18 bonspiels, and we had some play-downs on top of that," he said. "We also had a good turnout of men's and ladies' memberships." Quinn said the ice plant at the rink will likely be shut down for the summer today.
