For the members of this year's Hapnot Collegiate graduating class, there were clearly mixed feelings. In some ways, the occasion seemed to take far too long to arrive. Yet in others, it came much too early. But ready or not, 103 young people entered a new chapter in their lives Wednesday evening. Their convocation at the Whitney Forum was a time to reminisce, share laughs with old friends and look ahead at the life that awaits them. "Without a dream, there is no hope of finding purpose," guest speaker George Canyon, one of Canada's rising country music stars, told the grads in his address. Wearing his trademark cowboy hat, Canyon took the opportunity encourage the young men and women to follow their hearts. "Never, ever give up on a dream," said the 34-year-old musician, whose wife is from Flin Flon. Valedictorian Mark Miller gave an equally uplifting speech peppered with plenty of humour and anecdotes about growing up. He spoke on how friends, parents and teachers have all played a role in molding the graduates into the people they are today. Miller ended by quoting the late American philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson: "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." Following the speeches and the presentation of scholarships, awards and bursaries, the graduates paired up and marched down Main St. while onlookers cheered and offered their congratulations. Their Safe Grad celebration, also held at the Whitney Forum, went into the wee hours of Thursday.
