Question: It is graduation time and young people are looking for advice. As someone who has had success in his life, what advice would you give to young people just starting out? Mayor Therien: First and foremost, congratulations to all our grads in our area. It is truly an exciting time in your life and you deserve all the accolades you can and will get. The question is, what advice could I offer our grads who will be embarking on paths that will ultimately shape the rest of their lives. First, have a plan of some sort. Having said that, allow for lots of flexibility and/or changes to that initial plan. Plans or goals are a great thing. They are a smart and diligent thing to have and you should make every attempt to fulfill your plans/goals. However, things change and you need to remember that. Just because you change plans at a later date does not make you a failure; it makes you human. Second, live your life as you want to and get the most out of it. We are only on this earth for a very short time. Having said that, be prepared to share your life with others. If that is what you choose. Most of you will get married, have children and, once again, things can and will change. Third, and for the sake of space, "Be all that YOU can be." It is the motto of the US Army and is very appropriate. Success is so suggestive and takes on different meanings and approaches, that to measure success you have to compare it only to your own objectives and goals and only you can determine whether you consider yourself successful or not. For what it is worth, I believe as the youth of today get older, our future is very bright. Congratulations once again and good luck the rest of the way. * * * Question: Is the city willing to revitalize Phantom Lake into what it once was? Why or why not? Mayor Therien: I understand what you are getting at. Phantom Lake has a long and storied history, and to see it in the shape it is in is sad, to say the least. The question was, would the city get involved in revitalizing Phantom Lake? This is not as easy to answer as it could be. The easiest answer is to say no just based on the fact it is not within the city boundaries. Phantom Lake is kind of in "no man's land"; it is not in Flin Flon, it is not in Creighton. My guess is the residents out there pay taxes to the Province of Saskatchewan and, ultimately, the Province of Saskatchewan is responsible for Phantom Lake. If there was a real desire to bring Phantom Lake back to life once again, I am sure the city, as well as the Town of Creighton, would have their people working on securing grant monies towards this goal. Having said that, this is only my wishful thinking. * * * Forward your questions for Mayor Therien to The Reminder by phone at 687-3454, fax at 687-4473, e-mail at [email protected] or standard delivery at "Ask the Mayor," C/O The Reminder, 14 North Avenue, Flin Flon, MB, R8A 0T2.
